10,000 steps is roughly 7 to 8 km for many adults and takes around 1.5 to 2 hours of walking in total. The energy used depends on your weight and pace: the calculator gives an honest range for you, not a precise number.

How it estimates

  • Distance: steps × stride, with the stride at about 41% of your height.
  • Time: about 90, 100 or 120 steps a minute for an easy, normal or brisk walk.
  • Energy: walking METs (about 2.8, 3.5 and 4.3) × your weight × hours, shown as a range because real numbers vary.
