A streak that forgives: how rain barrels keep your logging streak

A streak that forgives keeps counting when life gets in the way. In Doydum, any day with at least one logged meal counts. Every 7 days you log fills a rain barrel, you can keep two, and a full barrel covers a day without a meal on its own. Away mode holds your streak for up to 14 days.

Why do streaks make people quit?

Streaks work because they turn a habit into something you can see. They fail for the same reason. A counter that drops from 46 to 0 after one busy Tuesday no longer measures your habit; it measures your worst day. Many of us know what comes next: the number is gone, so why bother tomorrow?

That all-or-nothing trap is a poor fit for food. Real weeks have travel, illness, weddings, night shifts and days when logging is the last thing on your mind. Missing a day doesn't mean the habit is over; it means that day was busy with other things. A tracker that punishes those days teaches you to leave. We wanted one that makes it easy to come back.

So we kept the streak, because a visible run really does feel good, and changed what happens on a quiet day. Rain barrels are our answer: you save up a little grace by logging, and it's spent for you when you need it. Here are the rules, exactly as the app applies them.

What counts as a day in your streak?

One meal. A day with at least one logged meal adds one to your streak. A photo-scanned dinner counts the same as a banana typed in at 23:00. We set the bar there on purpose: the streak is about showing up, not about a perfect day. Logging water, steps or a weigh-in is always welcome, but it's the meal that keeps the streak.

Today never breaks anything. Until midnight, a day without a meal is simply open; there is still time. Only a day that has fully passed without a meal raises the question of what happens next, and the answer is usually a rain barrel.

If you're new to logging, our guide to keeping a food diary covers the habit itself. This post is about what keeps it going.

How do rain barrels work?

Two rain barrels stand in the yard by Doy's house. They fill as you log:

  • Every 7 days with a meal fills one barrel. The water rises every couple of logged days, and the barrel is full on the seventh.
  • You can keep two. While both are full, your streak still grows; those days just don't fill a third barrel.
  • A full barrel covers a missed day by itself. No button, no prompt, no decision at midnight. The next time you open the app, Doy tells you it happened.
  • Covered days hold the count but don't add to it. A 14-day streak is still 14 after a covered day, and your next logged day makes it 15.
  • A barrel is never spent for nothing. With no streak to keep, a full barrel stays full.
Example: two weeks of logging and one quiet day
DayWhat happenedStreakBarrels
1–7A meal logged every day71 full
8–14A meal logged every day142 full
15No meal14 (covered)1 full
16A meal logged151 full, 1 of 7 days toward the next

That way even your busiest week can absorb a quiet day or two. The streak sheet tells you where you stand in plain words, such as “Both barrels are full” or “1 full · 3 of 7 days to the next”.

What happens if you miss a day with no barrel left?

Then the run ends, and that's all that ends. Nothing else is taken from you: the days you've gathered toward the next barrel stay, the farm stays as it is, and nothing turns red. In the week view, a quiet day just shows its date.

There's also one mend per account. If your run had at least two logged days and ended on a single missed day, and that day was yesterday or the day before, Doy offers to stitch it back: “Shall I mend our streak? The first one's on me.” Tap “Mend it” and the old run and the new one join up. Ignore it and the offer lapses quietly after two days. There's never a second one; barrels and away mode are the everyday safety net. Because the mend only looks back two days, an offer you can see is worth a tap.

And if a run does end, coming back is never awkward. Doy welcomes you without mentioning the old number (“There you are. The farm waited, and so did I.”), and on a Monday or the first of the month, the welcome is a fresh-start line instead.

Going on holiday? How away mode holds your streak

Some breaks you can see coming: a trip, a busy exam week, a family holiday. Open the streak sheet, tap “Going away?” and choose how many days, up to 14. The sheet keeps it simple: a minus and a plus for the days, and the date you'll be back, shown before you start.

  • Away starts today and runs forward; it can't be set for days that have already passed.
  • Days away hold your streak without adding to it, just like covered days.
  • A day you log while away still counts.
  • Changed plans? Starting away again while you're away simply moves the end date.
  • Back early? Tap “I'm back”. The days you were away stay held.
  • Your meal reminders keep their usual times while you're away, so switch them off if you'd rather have quiet.

If you feel like logging on holiday, nothing stops you; if you don't, your streak waits. While you're away, the streak pill on Home shows “Away”. Doy's send-off is short: “Have a good time. I'll mind the farm.”

How does the streak look on Doy's farm?

The barrels aren't an icon in a corner. They're part of the world: two wooden rain barrels on the yard beside Doy, in the farm scene at the top of Home, so you see their level every day. The same yard sits in the streak sheet, next to your week. As the barrels fill and empty, the yard changes week by week.

After a covered day, the farm plays it out once. Doy hops over to the front barrel, fills the watering can, waters the bed and hops home, and the barrel is empty. If you've turned on reduced motion, the farm skips the walk and simply shows the result. Either way, Doy says it plainly:

“A rain barrel took care of yesterday. Our streak carries on.”

Each day in the week view has a mark: a flame for a logged day, a drop for a day a barrel covered, a suitcase for away and a bandage for a mended day. When a barrel fills, that day's celebration adds a line: “A rain barrel filled. It will cover a quiet day.” And seven logged days in a row bring a black hen to the coop, one of the residents that move in as the months go by. The streak sheet also shows what's next on the farm, like a rug for Doy's house after seven logged days.

Doydum's streak rules at a glance

Here are all the rules in one table.

What happens to your streak
SituationWhat happens
A day with at least one mealThe streak grows by one, and the day counts toward the next barrel
Today, no meal yetNothing yet: the day is still open
A past day without a meal, while you're awayThe day is held and the streak stays the same
A past day without a meal, with a full barrelThe barrel covers it and the streak stays the same
A past day without a meal, with nothing to cover itThe run ends; days toward the next barrel stay
A single recent missed day, if you've never mendedDoy offers a one-time mend

Behind the table is one idea: the farm waits. There are no countdowns and no “you're about to lose it” warnings, and Doy's evening nudge about the streak goes quiet when a barrel is full or you're away, because nothing is at risk. One streak drives everything that shows it, from the flame on Home to Doy's lines and the black hen on the farm, so they always agree. Barrels are earned by logging, never bought, and there's no currency to manage. For the longer story of why we design this way, read a garden instead of a red number.

How to use the forgiving streak in Doydum

  1. Log one meal a day A photo, a search or a barcode all count. One meal keeps your streak and adds a day toward the next barrel.
  2. Watch the barrels fill On Home, the two rain barrels by Doy's house rise every couple of logged days and are full on the seventh.
  3. Tap the flame for details The streak sheet shows your week's marks, both barrels and how it all works.
  4. Set away before a trip In the streak sheet, tap “Going away?”, choose up to 14 days and start. Tap “I'm back” to end it early.
  5. Mend a missed day once If Doy offers a mend after a missed day, tap “Mend it”. There is one per account.

Questions people ask

What counts as a logged day for the streak?

Any day with at least one meal logged, whether by photo, search or barcode. It keeps your streak going and adds a day toward the next rain barrel. Today without a meal doesn't break anything; it stays open until the day is over.

How many rain barrels can I have?

Two at most. Every 7 days with a meal fills one, and a full barrel covers one day without a meal automatically. While both are full, your streak still grows but no third barrel fills. Once one is used, your next logged days start filling it again.

Does a covered day add to my streak?

No. Days covered by a barrel, held by away mode or mended keep your streak at the same number without adding to it. Your streak counts the days you actually logged a meal; the barrels just make sure a quiet day doesn't erase them.

Can I pause my streak for a holiday?

Yes. Away mode holds your streak for up to 14 days, starting today. It can't be backdated, a day you log while away still counts, and “I'm back” ends it early. Your meal reminders keep their usual times while you're away.
